College football: Arkansas Razorbacks' struggles continue with 35-26 home loss to Rutgers

Rutgers continues to look like it belongs among the country's best, and it keeps getting worse for preseason National Champion hopeful Arkansas.

The Razorbacks lost 35-26 at home to the Scarlet Knights (4-0) on Saturday, a week after Arkansas lost 52-0 to No. 1 Alabama. The Razorbacks have lost three games in a row for the first time since 2008 -- despite Cobi Hamilton's SEC-record 303 yards receiving and three touchdowns on Saturday.

The Razorbacks (1-3) entered the season ranked No. 8 before plummeting out of the rankings following a loss to Louisiana-Monroe. The last time they lost three in a row was in former coach Bobby Petrino's first season.

Petrino was fired in April, and interim coach John L. Smith -- whose brother passed away earlier this week -- was left to pick up the pieces after yet another disheartening defeat.

"Why would (fans) not think these guys are going to do the best that they can to right the ship?" Smith said. "They're going to go to the field. That's all we know. That's all they have. We don't have any other option except to go to the field, start tomorrow, work as hard as we can work, hopefully get some guys back and try to right it. That's all we can do."

Even quarterback Tyler Wilson's 419-yard passing performance in his return after missing the loss to the Crimson Tide with a concussion wasn't enough to stop Arkansas' losing ways.

Record-tying performance: Stefphon Jefferson

tied an NCAA record by scoring seven touchdowns in Nevada's 69-24 win over Hawaii. Jefferson, a junior running back, carried 31 times for 170 yards. He scored on 3-, 2-, 1-, 5-, 3- and 1-yard runs and added a 55-yard scoring reception.

It was the fourth time a player had seven touchdowns in a game, the first since Oklahoma State's Rashaan Woods did it in 2003.

Wisconsin's Ball injured: Heisman Trophy finalist Montee Ball left Wisconsin's win over UTEP with a head injury. Ball appeared to be injured on a 1-yard scoring run at the start of the second quarter. He looked shaken as he got up, and the Wisconsin medical staff was quick to take him on the sidelines and examine him. An announcement was made that Ball had a head injury and would not be returning.

Ball was not available for interviews afterward but sent out a tweet in which he suggested he would be ready for the Big Ten Conference opener this week at Nebraska.

"Just fine! I really am, great win boys. Great job James n Melvin steppn in! headin in the right direction!"

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal reported that if Ball did suffer a concussion, it would be his second in less than two months and perhaps his third in the last year.

Big kick: Central Michigan coach Dan Enos didn't even know David Harman's name when he took over the program before the 2010 season. He'll never forget Harman now. Harman drilled a 47-yard field goal with 3 seconds left and the Chippewas scored nine points in the final 45 seconds and stunned Iowa 32-31 in Iowa City.

Harman had the wind at his back on his wobbling winner, handing Iowa one of its most improbable defeats in 14 years under coach Kirk Ferentz.

"Harman is an unbelievable young man. When I got the job two years ago, in spring practice he was the third or fourth kicker," Enos said. "I didn't even know who he was for a week or two. He was a walk-on and didn't have a very strong leg. He works and he's tough."

Penn State wins again: Another strong defensive effort and Matt McGloin's career-high 318 passing yards extended Temple's decades-long streak of misery against its in-state rival as the Nittany Lions won 24-13.

Officially, the Temple losing streak in the series stands at 23 games since the seven Penn State victories between 2003-2011 have been vacated because of NCAA sanctions. The teams tied 1950, but the Owls haven't won since Oct. 18, 1941.

Can't miss QB: Connor Shaw completed 20 straight passes at one point and threw for two touchdowns to lead No. 7 South Carolina to a 31-10 rout of Missouri in the Tigers' first Southeastern Conference road game.

Navy wins: After watching Trey Miller lose two fumbles in the first quarter, Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo was furious and almost pulled his quarterback. Miller rewarded Niumatalolo's patience, rushing for 116 yards and three touchdowns to carry the Midshipmen past Virginia Military Institute 41-3. It was the first win of the season for Navy.
