AP PHOTOS: NYC concert shines spotlight on poverty

NEW YORK (AP) ? A crowd of about 60,000 music fans packed Central Park on Saturday night for the Global Citizen Festival, a free concert aimed at calling attention to worldwide poverty and featuring John Legend, Foo Fighters, Neil Young and other performers.

The concert was scheduled around the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week. The festival's organizers used a social media campaign as a means of helping educate concert-goers about global issues including child mortality, polluted drinking water, malaria and other ills that confront the world's poor.

South African struggled against the spin of Xavier Doherty, who struck thrice to put Australia in pole position in the ICC World T20 match, currently being played at Colombo.

Australia opted to bowl first after winning the toss, and made only one change by including the left-arm spinner at the expense of Daniel Christian. Doherty then repaid the faith by picking up openers, Richard Levi and Jacques Kallis, before taking out JP Duminy.

Shane Watson further kept his imperious form by dismissing Hashim Amla as the Proteas slumped to 66 for 4. South Africa also made one change to their lineup, which was defeated by Pakistan, leaving out Albie Morkel in preference for Wayne Parnell.

England and Sri Lanka have been fined for slow-over rate during their respective wins last night in the ongoing Super Eights round of the ICC World T20, against New Zealand and West Indies respectively.

The defending champions defeated the Kiwis by 6 wickets, while the hosts inflicted a 9-wicket thumping to the Windies. Both teams were found one over short from completing their respective quotas in the allotted time.

Captains, Mahela Jayawardene and Stuart Broad, have been fined 20% of their match fees, while the players have been deducted 10%.

Former Indian players, Ravi Shastri and Sanjay Manjrekar, have criticized the national team?s decision to exclude premier opener, Virender Sehwag, from the team?s last fixture against Australia.

The Men In Blue suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Aussies, who easily chased down a 141-run target, courtesy their opening duo, Shane Watson and David Warner, both of whom struck impressive half-centuries. The loss meant that the Indian team will need to win both their remaining Super Eights fixtures, against Pakistan and South Africa respectively.

The former cricketers further slammed the inclusion of an unfit Yuvraj Singh, who recently recovered from a career-ending lung tumor.

"My contention is, [for] eight months Yuvraj Singh has hardly played cricket, and when it comes to India vs Pakistan I'm not the kind to get emotional," Shastri told TIMES NOW. "My team would have Sehwag opening the innings, especially against Australia," Manjrekar told ESPNcricinfo. "I think it was an opportunity missed, because that was the kind of attack Sehwag likes on this kind of a pitch.? ?

Movie review: Not many laughs in 'Hotel Transylvania' | The Salt ...

Does everything Adam Sandler touch these days turn to crap? Even when he?s a voice in a cartoon, as in "Hotel Transylvania," Sandler?s one-take, everything-I-say-is-funny attitude spoils the fun.

Sandler provides the voice to Count Dracula, here a worried single dad who has built an exclusive resort hotel that caters to human-fearing monsters and provides a haven for Drac?s daughter, Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez). For her 118th birthday, Mavis wants to spread her bat wings and see the world from which Dracula has shielded her.

As her birthday party gets rolling, a stray human hiker, Jonathan (voiced by Andy Samberg, Sandler?s "That?s My Boy" co-star), wanders into the hotel, and Dracula works to keep him from scaring the monstrous guests. (Any similarity between this plot and Pixar?s "Monsters, Inc." is, no doubt, coincidental.)

Director Genndy Tartakovsky (the creator of "Dexter?s Laboratory" and "Samurai Jack") keeps the computer animation lively, with some inventive touches and a constantly moving camera view to highlight the 3-D effects.

The voice casting is uninspired, as Sandler assembles his cadre of buddies (Kevin James voicing Frankenstein, David Spade as the Invisible Man, Steve Buscemi as the Wolfman) for recording sessions that were probably more fun for them than they are for us.

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Keegan Bradley's only regret was there weren't more holes to play.

Not to worry. After the day he and the rest of the U.S. rookies had, no way captain Davis Love III is pulling them off the course.

Bradley and good buddy Phil Mickelson knocked off Europe's top two teams, fellow rookies Webb Simpson and Jason Dufner each delivered a point, and the Americans are well on their way to winning the Ryder Cup for just the third time since 1995 with a 5-3 lead.

"All the rookies ... played very, very well," Love said. "I was really impressed. We played as a team today, and I think that's all we wanted. We got off to a great start."

There are two more sessions of team matches Saturday, and Love is sticking with his young guns. Simpson and Bubba Watson, who thrashed Paul Lawrie and Peter Hanson 5-and-4, will lead off the morning foursomes against Justin Rose and Ian Poulter. Bradley and Mickelson will face Lee Westwood and Luke Donald, and Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson will play Nicolas Colsaerts and Sergio Garcia. Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker will get another crack at Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell after pushing them so hard in Friday's first match Europe's top team had nothing left in the afternoon.

The most noticeable absence from the U.S. lineup? Tiger Woods, who was benched after getting shut out on the opening day for the fourth time. After winning their first six outings together, Woods and Steve Stricker have now lost four straight in match play.

"We just don't want guys to be worn out," Love said. "We need Tiger and Steve in the afternoon. We need Tiger and Steve on Sunday."

Besides, the youngsters have got this.

Europe has won four of the last five Ryder Cups, and it looked as if the Americans might be in for another disappointing weekend Friday morning. They were actually trailing in all of the foursome matches at one point, and Medinah was as silent as a shrine. But Bradley holed a 25-foot putt to beat Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald 4-and-3, their first loss ever in foursomes, and the splash of red on the scoreboard woke everyone up.

Dufner and Zach Johnson followed with a 3-and-2 win over Lee Westwood and Francesco Molinari, and Snedeker and Furyk made McIlroy and McDowell grind out their 1-up win.

That turned out just to be the warm up. Simpson and Bubba Watson, who sat out the morning matches, bulldozed Paul Lawrie and Peter Hanson, going 6 up after the eighth hole, and the U.S. rout was on. Matt Kuchar ran off four straight birdies as he and Dustin Johnson built an early lead against Justin Rose and Martin Kaymer.

"Every time we got to the green, we had 30 seconds to spare and look up and see the other guys playing well," Simpson said. "It made us want to keep playing well and keep making birdies and see how soon we could get the 'W.'"

But the best show came from Bradley and Mickelson.

Mickelson has made Bradley his pet project since the 26-year-old joined the PGA Tour last year, roping him into money matches during practice rounds to prepare him for days just such as this. That Bradley was a gamer was clear last season, when he won the first major he played, the PGA Championship.

This performance was, if possible, even better.

With McDowell and McIlroy looking flat from their morning match, Bradley and Mickelson took it to them right away and were 3 up after three holes. Bradley did most of the work, making one clutch putt after another and playing with such unbridled energy he practically crackled. No one, from the crowd to Mickelson, was immune.

"I love playing with Keegan," Mickelson said. "I would say to him a couple of times, I need a little pep talk, and he would give me something, get me boosted right up, and I would end up hitting a good shot."

Like the one to close out McIlroy and McDowell 2-and-1.

Mickelson stuffed a 7-iron to 2 feet ? "the greatest shot I've ever seen," Bradley said ? and the walk to the green looked like a Mardi Gras parade as they screamed, hugged, clapped and high-fived.

"It was like a Patriots game out there," Bradley, a New England native, said with a grin. "It was just a moment that I'll obviously never forget the rest of my life."

Woods and Stricker would probably like to forget their day.

They were downright dismal in foursomes, spraying tee shots into the gallery and the water and showing no touch whatsoever on the greens. Woods was somewhat improved in the afternoon, making a bending, 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th and a shot into 4 feet on the 17th that looked as if it might square the match. But he and Stricker were no match for Europe's lone rookie, Nicolas Colsaerts, who single-handedly kept his team from getting swept in fourballs with eight birdies and an eagle ? a 10-under 62 if he was keeping score on his own. The "Belgian Bomber" may be known for his long drives, but he can putt, too, answering Woods with a 25-footer on 17 that ensured the Americans could do no better than a halve.

The Europeans got the full point when Woods' 12-footer for birdie on 18 caught the lip.

"I knew how vital it was. I wasn't sure if Nicolas did," said Lee Westwood, who provided little more than moral support and entertainment for Colsaerts. "He said he was looking at the scoreboards, but there's a massive difference between getting a halve and getting a win. ... We need a big day tomorrow. But we're still within touching distance there if we do have a good day."

Interview With Tony Horton P90X Inventor - Business Insider

Vice presidential candidate?Paul Ryan credits P90X, an intense 90-day home workout routine, for his ripped abs and lean build. So do Hollywood heavyweights like?Ben Stiller, Ashton Kutcher?and?Demi Moore. ?

The flood of unsolicited celebrity endorsements is one reason why Beachbody, the Santa-Monica based company that produces the workout DVDs, doesn't have to pay for Hollywood's stamp of approval.

Instead, the company relies on word-of-mouth and infomercials.?

That tactic seems to be working.

Since the program was introduced in 2005, Beachbody has sold around 4 million copies of P90X DVDS, according to The New York Times. In 2010,?P90X made up half of Beachbody's sales, CNBC's Darren Rovell reported.?

The?basic P90X package?sells for $119.85 and comes with 12 workout DVDs, a nutrition plan with recipes and meal schedules and a fitness guide that shows you how to do each exercise.?

But the boot-camp style workout regime, which uses a theory called "muscle confusion" to whip even the fluffiest bodies into sculpted specimens, isn't only for high-powered politicians and movie stars. ??

"Our audience is everybody," P90X creator and fitness guru Tony Horton says. "From folks in their 70s to their teens, male and female, professional, collegiate, high school athletes and government officials."?

We spoke with Horton about the development of P90X and the impact of Paul Ryan's (and many other celebs') praise of the super tough workout plan. ??

Business Insider: What is P90X??

Tony Horton: P90X is based on a theory called "muscle confusion." This is a modern version of periodization training. I did not reinvent the wheel, but what I did was was combine weight training with yoga, pilates, karate and core exercises. The focus and desire was to make sure that people would have a 90-day plan and have routines that focused on their strengths and their weaknesses. ?Because of the variety ? there are 12 different workouts ? your body inevitably must change because of the fact that you're working on your weaknesses.?Some people describe it as a "90-day bootcamp." I think it's more than that. It's a 90-day re-education of what's required to get in the best shape of your life regardless of where you are: an ex-athlete, a mother of five, whether you're 25 or 45. ?

BI: Is there enough space to do this in my small apartment and what other equipment do I need?

TH: The program is designed to be done in your home. You need resistance bands, some dumbbells, a pull-up bar [which is optional] and a mat. That's it. The space you need is not much bigger than the size of a dining room table.?Most of the routines, more than 50 percent, are body-weight exercises, so you don't even need equipment for a lot of it.?

BI: Does this mean I should end my gym membership once I order the program??

TH: There's no one-size-fits-all answer.?A lot of people will put their gym membership on hold and when the 90 days are up, some of them will go back to the gym and do their traditional machine work and integrate those with P90X routines. Other folks will just quit the gym all together because they love being able to get better results in their house. It really depends. Some people really love the atmosphere of the gym. I like the gym and try to go once in a while when I'm traveling to different cities.

BI: Can you continue past the 90 days??

TH: There are three versions of P90X: Classic, Lean, and Doubles [the workouts use the same 12 DVDs, but in a different order and schedule]. A lot of people go back-and-forth. I know people who have done more than 20 rounds of P90X.?I also created P90X2 for people who have done several rounds and want to go to the next level.?P90X is indoor training for the outside world. I'm trying to focus on feeling good, performing well and functioning better as opposed to using P90X solely as a means to change your physique aesthetically. ??

BI: What's the history behind the P90X workout program??

TH: Back in the mid-80s and 90s I was a personal trainer, like a lot of people in Los Angeles. I was working over at 20th Century Fox and training my boss. My boss introduced me to Tom Petty and from there I started training a lot of celebrities and rock 'n' roll folks like Annie Lennox, Bruce Springsteen, Sean Connery and Ewan McGregor.?When you're working with folks like that, they have a lot of people around them who have high expectations. I figured out a way early on to try and get and these folks motivated without getting frustrated. The goal was to get results so that I could keep working and keep getting hired by other celebrities.?You want to avoid three things: boredom, injuries and the plateau effect. People saw results they had never seen before when using P90X. In the early stages I was getting up around 4:45 a.m., meeting my first client, then driving all over the city and finishing at 10 p.m. I was probably making $25 to $40 an hour. It seemed like a lot at the time.?

BI: Who is your audience??

TH:?Before P90X, there was a product called Power 90.?When we created P90X, our customers were our Power 90 customers and the folks that had been going to the gym and not getting results.?Everybody in our industry thought were were wasting our time because it [P90X] was too difficult for the average American, whom we were asking to think and act like an athlete.?I thought, if we make it fun and entertaining then our audience would probably be my demographic ? somewhere between 25 and 55. It ended up being much greater than that.?

Suddenly a lot of celebrities and people in government were talking about it. The audience opened up because they were seeing the people that they knew and respected in the public eye, who were of all shapes and sizes, doing it.?We don't pay anybody a penny to endorse P90X, but there was a lot of legitimacy to it.?Before you knew it, I'd go on the Home Shopping Network and sell out to grandmothers. I've been to the Philadelphia Eagles facility where the conditioning coach uses P90X with his players. I've been to Walter Reed Army hospital where men are using the routines.?

BI: Have you seen an increased interest in P90X since Paul Ryan's?endorsement??

TH: It certainly helps, as much as Michelle Obama [the First Lady is also a P90X convert]. It's a bi-partisan act to move and to eat better. It's not really for Democrats or Republicans, the elderly or high school kids. It's for anybody and everybody that wants to change.?Paul Ryan was a trainer when he came out of college, so he understood the concept of muscle confusion and why P90X works.?I don't know if it equates to sales, but it certainly does lead to a lot of interviews. Our Web traffic has doubled.?

BI: Is it possible for Paul Ryan to have 6 to 8 percent body fat? (Slate's Bill Gifford recently questioned this claim.)?

TH: I would claim that's probably true. He is very, very, very lean. I know what 6 to 8 percent body fat looks like, and there's no fat anywhere on the man. I'm around 9 percent and he's much leaner than I am.?I could show you thousands and thousands of regular folks who did P90X and have dropped down to that range. If you're working out 6 days a week and all you eat is fruit, vegetables and proteins you'll get down there. Most athletes don't eat as well as Paul Ryan or Michelle Obama.?

BI: Is that body-fat percentage healthy? ?

TH: Is it healthy for everybody to climb Mount Everest? Scuba dive? Run half marathons? It depends on the person.?There's no one-size-fits-all answer. You have to consider countless different factors like body types, genetics and blood pressure.?

BI: Besides results, why is P90X so popular?

TH: I think the reason anything is popular is the delivery system. One of the reasons P90X works is because I make the process of working out entertaining. Some people find me funny, others find me obnoxious ? but hopefully more people find me funny than obnoxious.?I do my?Arnold Schwarzenegger?and pterodactyl?impressions and I have funny tips for the day.?

Some trainers treat fitness like rocket science. Others take on a drill sergeant mentality. I make hard-core entertaining and silly. That's a nuance that puts it over the top.

Gunman fired day of Minneapolis office shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? A man who burst into a sign-making business in Minneapolis, fatally shooting the owner and three others before turning the gun on himself, had been fired from the company earlier in the day, police said Friday.

Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan identified the shooter, who injured at least four others in the Thursday afternoon attack, as Andrew J. Engeldinger, 36, of Minneapolis.

Engeldinger had been fired from his job at Accent Signage Systems earlier in the day, Dolan said. He came back about 4:25 p.m., parked his car, walked into the loading dock area and immediately started shooting people. But it also appeared he may have spared some of his former colleagues.

"It's clear he did walk by some people, very clear," Dolan said.

Investigators who searched a house Thursday night in south Minneapolis where Engeldinger lived found another gun and packaging for 10,000 rounds of ammunition in the house.

"He's obviously been practicing in how to use that gun," Dolan said.

Among those killed were businessman Reuven Rahamim, 61, who was the owner of Accent Signage Systems Inc. in Bryn Mawr, a mainly residential neighborhood on the northwest side of the city, son-in-law Chad Blumenfield said in a statement.

"Other members of the Accent family tragically lost their lives as well, and we mourn their loss," Blumenfield said. He provided no details.

UPS driver Keith Basinski was also killed, the mail service said in a statement Friday. UPS Northern Plains District President Jill Schubert did not say why Basinski was at the Accent offices. She said the company was "profoundly shocked and saddened" at his death.

Authorities have not revealed the names of the others killed.

The deal leases 7,200 wireless towers to the infrastructure firm for a term of 28 years in exchange for $2.4 billion -- that T-Mobile's parent Deutsche Telekom will use to pay off debt. As part of the contract, Crown Castle can buy the towers outright when the deal ends in 2040 for a further $2.4 billion -- and is planning to make money by adding another tenant to T-Mobile's system, so depending on your carrier, you might find your coverage suddenly getting a lot better.

In a new bombshell lawsuit, McMahon claims he was fired for raising one too many red flags about whether his patients were really dead before doctors harvested their organs.

According to The New York Post, which broke the story, McMahon says that last September a 19-year-old man injured in a car crash was sent to the Nassau University Medical Center. The young patient was still laboring to breathe and had other signs of brain activity. But Michael Goldstein, director of the federally funded New York Organ Donor Network, allegedly said during a conference call: "This kid is dead, you got that?"

"I have been in Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan in combat," McMahon told The Post. "I worked on massive brain injuries, trauma, gunshot wounds, IEDs. I have seen worse cases than this and the victims recover."

Why would doctors do something like that?

Maybe because organ donations are urgently needed to save many lives and also because organ donations give hospitals a great deal of profitable business?

The law gives doctors -- and doctors, alone -- the irrevocable and unreviewable power to declare death. You are dead, in the eyes of the law, when a doctor declares you so -- and once he or she does, your organs may be taken to save other people's lives. (After which, you will certainly be dead.)

Veteran science writer Dick Teresi, by coincidence, wrote a book on this phenomenon called "The Undead."

Teresi's confidence in doctors' objective ability to determine brain death was shaken when he entered his father's room in the hospital after a heart attack. His dad "propped himself up, shook my hand, and said, 'Thank you for coming.' We had a short talk."

A young doctor later approached Teresi and said, "I'm sorry, but your father's not going to regain consciousness before he dies. You thought you talked to him. He probably made some reflexive sounds, and you interpreted it as speech."

Teresi actually believed the doctor and was embarrassed.

Then a second doctor entered his father's room and his father again propped himself up, shook the doctor's hand and they spoke.

This doctor told Teresi, "Sure. I talk to Cliff every day."

What about the first doctor -- the one who told Teresi it was just meaningless sounds? "Oh," the older doctor replied, "that's a neurology resident. They teach them that in medical school today. Everybody is dead or in a coma."

Teresi's book is filled with disturbing evidence that "brain death" as it is practiced today is not a scientific concept, but essentially a religious or philosophical one administered by doctors untrained in either discipline.

Among the most chilling details Teresi brings back from the land of the undead: The allegedly dead bodies are given anesthetic before their organs are harvested. Why? Because doctors found that, otherwise, blood pressure spiked during surgery in a way that we associate with pain or trauma. But how can a dead body feel pain?

McMahon's lawsuit is rife with similar peculiarities. In November 2011, he says, a woman who had suffered a drug overdose was admitted to Staten Island University Hospital and declared brain dead. Her body was still jerking and she had other signs of brain activity. He noticed she was being given a "paralyzing anesthetic," perhaps to make her appear more dead.

On Nov. 4, McMahon told Helen Irving, president and CEO of the New York Organ Donor Network, that one in five patients declared brain dead showed signs of brain activity at the time death was declared. Irving allegedly replied, "This is how things are done."

"If you wait for everything to be a hundred percent," a physician told Teresi, "you'd never have organ donation."

Brain-dead patients often show many signs of life: They move, get goose bumps, heal from wounds and even grow. When Alan Shewmon presented evidence of this at a 2000 conference, doctors responded that the human is nonetheless dead in these cases because the "person" is missing.

From a scientific standpoint, this is very close kin to saying cutting out this human's heart would not be murder because his soul had already flown to God.

Maybe so, but who are doctors to say?

If the medical profession is growing used to killing, the fault is not theirs, but ours. It's a convenient fiction that McMahon's lawsuit gives us a new chance to seriously reconsider.
